More Than Just a Stick of Rock

I recently had the chance to spend a morning in Blackpool - I hadn’t been there for ages so I took the opportunity to do a bit of research beforehand and was intrigued to find out that Blackpool had hosted the Sand Sea and Spray event between 2012 and 2016. So, five years later, what was left?

The simple answer was the I didn’t get the opportunity to 100% find out due to (apart from snow) every different kind of weather being thrown at me that morning but - I think - it was still a worthwhile exercise and hopefully you’ll enjoy the results (which are mainly from Bonny Street car park) here.

Urban artists used to come to Blackpool from all over Europe to take part in the Sand, Sea and Spray event and transform some of the blank walls of Blackpool into masterpieces of colour and skill.

From what I can see and trace back many of the original pieces have been painted over but we expect that: it is all part of the evolving and transient nature of street art and one of the reasons why I am keen to document it and mark the moment in time.

It will definitely be worth a repeat trip at some point in time: I understand that (in addition to Bonney Street car park) Deansgate, Adelaide Street car park, the car park on Central Drive/Palatine Road, the Winter Gardens and Church Street are all locations where work was originally created so it feels like I’ve still got plenty to go at.

Blackpool still has plenty to offer - hopefully the festival can be recreated at some point but in the meantime let’s just enjoy what is clearly still a vibrant scene.
