Connectivity
December 15, 2021I’ve just enjoyed a trip to London and was lucky enough to stay at the CitizenM in Shoreditch (which is excellent btw and puts you slap bang in the middle of some amazing street art: you can even smell the fresh paint).
Shoreditch is home to some amazing street art generally: I suspect I could spend weeks trying to capture it all and still not do it justice but for the purpose of this blog I just wanted to concentrate on a stunning series of murals all based around the theme of “connectivity” which are right next to the hotel. Taking over one complete building groups of artists have all created pieces linked to that one idea by using their own very different interpretations and styles.
In March 2018 Hunto and Mr Thoms painted the start of the building and they were then followed by Captain Kris and Tizer who, in turn, handed over the baton to a woodland scene by Ed Hicks and Dr Zadok. The corner panel is courtesy of Busk and Mr Switch which then flows into a collection of hands in a grid structure by Ninth Seal and Best Ever.
There is then a tribute to some old skool modes of connection by Manchester’s own Nomad Clan: think about the old fast forward and rewind symbols which in turn leading through to a collaboration between Mr Cenz and Lovepusher.
Follow the building further round and there is an abstract network created by AutOne and Neist which can be viewed from multiple different angles and locations. You can stand right next to the building or further back towards Curtain Road and each step back brings in further layers. The planters on Great Eastern Street have even been linked to the piece. If it were in green it would remind me of The Matrix but instead it utilises a Pride Matters rainbow of colours and wow does it work.
The whole thing is an amazing piece by some truly talented artists.
One final word on the location which is right next to Amnesty International’s UK offices. I suspect that the theme of connectivity is linked to so many things but let’s not forget the things that connect us as human beings… do unto others as you would have them do unto you: we all deserve happiness and an end to suffering…
